How to Rewire Your Brain for Abundance

25 October 2026 · By Michael

Most of us never chose our beliefs about money. We picked them up at the kitchen table, long before we could count our pocket money. The good news is that a story you inherited is still just a story, and stories can be rewritten.

Where the old story comes from

Think back to how money was talked about when you were small. Maybe it was a constant worry, a source of arguments, or something nobody mentioned at all. Perhaps you heard that money doesn't grow on trees, that rich people are greedy, or that wanting more is selfish.

Children are wonderful listeners. We soak up the mood around money as much as the words, and we carry that mood into adulthood without noticing. Years later it shows up as guilt when we spend, panic when we check the bank balance, or a quiet feeling that we don't deserve good things.

Your brain can learn a new path

Your brain keeps changing throughout your life. Thoughts you repeat become easier to think, a bit like a track worn through long grass. That's why old money worries feel so automatic. It also means a new track can be made. It won't happen overnight, and it isn't about forcing yourself to feel rich. It's about gently choosing a different thought, again and again, until it starts to feel natural.

Small ways to start

  • Notice the voice. When a money thought pops up, ask yourself: is this mine, or did I learn it?
  • Write down one inherited belief and a kinder version of it. “There's never enough” might become “I'm learning to look after what I have.”
  • Each evening, name three things you already have plenty of, like time with a friend, a good meal or a warm bed.
  • Talk about money calmly in front of the kids in your life. They are learning their own money story from you right now.

Abundance isn't about a mansion or a flash car. It's the settled feeling that you have enough, and that you are enough. That feeling can grow, one small thought at a time.

This article shares general ideas about mindset. It isn't financial advice, so for decisions about debt, savings or investing, please speak with a qualified financial adviser. And if you're a parent, go easy on yourself: there are no perfect parents, only ones who keep learning.

If this has stirred something, The Money Mindset goes deeper into rewriting your relationship with money, and Rich Parent | Poor Parent looks at the scarcity or abundance mindset we pass on to our children.
