Feeling stuck is one of the loneliest feelings there is. You know something needs to change, but every morning looks the same as the last. If that sounds familiar, you're not lazy and you're not broken. Usually, you're caught between pressures from outside and habits from within.
The pressure from outside
Bills, mortgages, family expectations and the endless scroll of other people's highlight reels all push us towards a certain kind of life. Work longer, buy more, keep up. Most of us were never asked if we wanted this script. We were simply handed it, and it can feel risky to put it down.
The habits within
Then there are the patterns we carry. Fear of failing, or even of succeeding. People pleasing, so we keep saying yes when we mean no. Waiting until we feel ready, which can mean waiting forever. Telling ourselves that this is just how life is.
None of these habits are character flaws. They are often old ways of keeping ourselves safe that have outlived their usefulness.
Finding the door
The first step out of any trap is seeing it clearly. Try writing two lists: what keeps you stuck from the outside, and what keeps you stuck from the inside. You might be surprised how much ends up on the second list. That's actually good news, because it's the part you can begin to change today.
Then choose one small step. Not a whole new life, just one honest action. Say no to one thing. Spend twenty minutes on something that matters to you. Tell someone the truth about how you feel. Small steps add up, and each one loosens the grip a little more.
Be gentle with yourself
Getting unstuck isn't a race. Some days you'll move forward, and some days you'll slip back into old ways. That's part of it, not a sign you've failed.
If feeling stuck has turned into feeling hopeless, please reach out to your GP or a counsellor. In Australia you can call Lifeline on 13 11 14, any time of day or night.
